Ants and their ways

There are innumerable insects in the world. Many of them live individually while some insects like bees and ants live in families. They are so like human beings in many ways. Ants are the most interesting of all the insects. Just like humans they build their own houses. Can you ever imagine a kingdom beneath this earth? Yes, an empire exists besides humans’ kingdom and that is the “ants’ kingdom” located below this earth. They have a ‘king’ and a ‘queen’. Each ant is assigned its own tasks. Each ant has its own work to do. There are hunters, workers and soldiers. There are farmers among ants who grow ‘ant rice’. Moreover, some ants keep ‘cows’. Criminals are found in every society and so are there among ants. These criminals steal food from other worker ants, and take away their young ones for food. The ants in a nest form a great family. They live and work together. Every ant has its own work and it duty well. The very young ants, who have just come out of their cocoons, are generally the nurses. When they grow, they leave the nest and do many kinds of work. There are ‘hunters’ among the ants. They hunt for food; they take it to their nest. Their task is to hunt food for the whole nest. The food is distributed among all the members of the nest, which includes the Queen, nurses, other workers, the grubs, and the hunters too. Every morning, a large number of ants leave the nest. They spend the whole day outside their nest for hunting food. These ants can be seen running around everywhere. They search for food. If one of them finds some food, it takes it to the nest, so that all the ants can share it. Ants like to eat sugary things. The hunting ants can carry honey and other sweet things in their bodies. When anything is too big for a single ant to carry, it gets the help from other ants. Many of the ants are workers. Their task is to build new passages. Sometimes they are busy in mending holes that have appeared in the nest. All the day they work, busily digging out bits of sand and soil and carrying them out of the nest. When rainwater reaches their nest, the workers and the hunters try their level best to save the eggs.
