The Road Safety Code

A code is a set of rules telling you what to do and what not to do. On the road following the Road Safety Code is more important than good manners. It may mean that the road user should be very careful while using the road. That is why everyone should read the Road Safety Code and follow it. School boys and school girls should pay particular attention to the section dealing with pedestrians. But it is a good idea to read the other section as well. Most countries have their own road safety codes. Here are the 16 rules of the safety code prepared for Pakistan as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

 The Road User on Foot

                                            Walking along:

1: where there is a footpath, use it.
2: while on a footpath, do not walk near to the edge, with your back to the traffic.
3: where there is no footpath, walk on the extreme right of the road to face the oncoming traffic. Walk in single file.
4: Do not walk on cycle tracks.
5: Do not step on to the road without ensuring that it is safe to do so. Do not loiter on the roadway and be particularly careful at blind corners.

 Kerb drill

Before you step on the road, stop at the Kerb. Look right; if all is clear look left; if all is clear look right again. If all is still clear, cross, keeping a careful look all the time.

 Crossing the road

1: where available always use pedestrian crossings, central refuges, subways and footbridges.
2: Do not step out from behind a stationary vehicles or slow-moving bus, without making sure the road is clear.
3: Do not cross the road diagonally. Always cross at right angles. Walk briskly. Do not panic and run.
4: when there is a central refuge, stop on it in a position where motorists on the far half of the road can see you, especially at night. When the road is clear, complete the crossing road.
5: At pedestrian crossings, watch out for approaching vehicles and give them ample time to stop, especially if roads are wet.

 crossing roads

When crossing at crossroads look out for vehicles coming round the corner.

 wet roads

Watch your steps on wet and slippery roads. A fast moving vehicle will take longer to halt on a wet road.
