EVILS OF WARS
In old time, wars generally were fought for conquests or for glory. Now- a- days, they are fought to create friendly countries and for economic reasons. Instead of using pens, nations take up weapons to settle the disputes. This is the roughest way of settling things. Nations, who pride themselves on their civilization, become uncivilized. They begin to break each other’s heads and to kills and plunder. They are, thus, no better than the wild beasts in the jungle. There are many evils of war. It is death and destruction. Destructive weapons like tanks, bombing aero planes, horrible bombs and gases are used in the war. The fighting forces as well as the civilian and harmless population are equally destroyed. Wars in these days are not fought between fighting men only but all are involved in them. Everything is considered fair in war. The people lose their moral sense. The evil qualities and passions of men come to the forefront. They become cruel, greedy and revengeful. Dishonesty, bribery and corruption spread in every field of life. In fury they destroy beautiful cities with their historic buildings, libraries, hospitals, holy places of worships and the things of art. They destroy standing crops, cattle and means of communications. Millions of the men are killed, wounded, disabled and maimed. Millions of the women become widows, children become orphans; and innumerable persons are turned homeless. Scores of diseases spread and cause havoc. The wealth of the world is wasted. Hunger and poverty take humanity in their grip. Prices of things rise and many articles of everyday use are not available causing inconvenience and discomfort, everywhere. We have been through two World Wars in the 20th century. We know about the destruction they brought. Now the nations of the world have Nuclear weapons with them. A thinker has commented on this situation in these words: “if the third World War takes place, here would be no victim, no victor, but only a few survivors.” When, in the end, war is over, it is found that the war has created more problems than solved. Therefore, every one of us should try to create temper of peace is always better than war. “Live and let live” should be our motto. Two thousand years ago Aristotle said: “man is a social animal.” It is a true even today. Man cannot live alone. He is bound to in a society, in a country.
