Famous Festivals in the world
A festival is a public
celebration. The events of the festivals allow the people to rejoice by leaving
the routine which made their lives dull and boring. Besides, the events of the
festivals reflect the culture, customs and the traditions of the people where
they are held. Pakistan is a land where festivals and fairs are held
frequently. The Pakistani people are devotedly religious. They celebrate
religious and cultural festivals with enthusiasm. Religious festivals include
Eid-ul-Fitar, Eid-ul-Azha and Eid Milad-un-Nabi. Similarly, various countries
of the world organize and celebrate different types of the cultural and
religious festivals on specific dates. Some of the best festivals are described
below.
Shandur Polo Festivals
Shandur, situated at an altitude
of 3700 meters (12,500 feet) above sea level, is well-known because of having
the world’s highest polo ground. It is called Roof of the world. It is located
in District Ghizer, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The type of polo game that
natives of this region play in Shandur
Polo Ground is
called free style polo. Polo is the most preferred game in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Local people from various valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan love playing polo. At
least one polo ground is available in each of the valleys including Gilgit,
Hunza, Laspor skardu, Chitral, Mastoj and Shigar. The Shandur lake and natural surrounding beautiful. There
are small hills located at all four sides of the rectangular ground, where
spectators can sit and enjoy watching the match. From 1936 onwards the Shandur
polo Festival is celebrated regularly, each year, between 7 and 9 July, which
turns the magnificent polo ground of Shandur into a city of the tents. Polo is
known as the king of games and the games of the kings. Thousands of spectators
and tourists from various parts of the country particularly from Hunza, Skardu
and Chitral gather at Shandur to attend the event. Shandur polo Ground is
located at an altitude of 3,700 meters and this level of altitude reduces the
amount of oxygen here so it becomes very difficult for the teams to play. That
is why only those players can participate in these events that have strong
stamina. Traditionally, the match of polo is played between the teams of Gilgit
and Chitral. The best players are chosen for the teams and the game is usually
played to the musical band comprising a big drum. All these make the festival
happier.
