pollution and its impacts
Since the 17th
century, world’s achievements in science and technology have been significant.
Science, is based upon the information that comes from five senses, has amazed
the whole world with its advances, most of which were made in the last four or
five decades of the 21st century. The present world has become a
global village because of communication advancements. Man has invented
countless impressive machines and motor vehicles like cars, buses, trains and
airplanes which have brought revolution in the field of transportation and
communication. With the help of jet air crafts, one can travel around the world
in a short time. However, one should not forget that these scientific
inventions have made human life more threatening than ever. Vehicles use
petrol, diesel and coal as fuel which are considered pollutants as they emit
poisonous smoke. Things as simple as temperature, light and sound may also
become dangerous pollutants when they are introduced artificially in to the
environment. This poisonous smoke contains carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.
When these highly poisonous gases mix with the air, they pollute it which is
called environmental pollution. There are several kinds of pollution, for
example; air pollution, soil pollution, water pollution and noise pollution. We
watch innumerable carriages, rickshaws, trucks, buses and cars plying on the
roads. These are the main sources of air pollution. Besides, there are
thousands of trains carrying passengers and their goods from one place to
another. These trains mostly used coal or fuel. The smoke emitted by trains is
highly poisonous. More than 60% air pollution is caused by vehicles and trains.
The contaminated air is harmful to human beings because all living beings need
fresh air to inhale. When they inhale polluted air, they fall victim to lung
diseases. It is said that, globally, more than 3million people get killed by
air pollution every year. There are millions of mills and factories which
manufacture goods of different kinds. The chimneys of these mills and factories
also release poisonous smoke. Moreover, these factories use many kinds of
poisonous and harmful chemicals. A lot of kinds of waste matter produced by the
mills and factories are drained out into stream and rivers. This contaminated
water is dangerous for fish and other aquatic organisms. Thus, water pollution
is mainly caused due to these factories and mills. Contaminated water causes
several stomach diseases among living beings.
