NETWORK TOPOLOGY:
The arrangement or layout of
computers in a network is called network topology. In simple words we can say
that the way computers and devices are connected in a network is called network
topology. There are different types of network topology some of them discussed:
§ BUS TOPOLOGY
§ RING TOPOLOGY
§ STAR TOPOLOGY
§ MESH TOPOLOGY
BUS
TOPOLOGY:
In
this topology a main transmission line is laid down in the center of network
and all the devices and computers are connected to each other. The physical
line is called bus that is why this type of network is called bus network or
bus topology. Data travel through the center line until it reaches the required
device or computer. At both end of line there are terminators that terminate
data when it reaches the destination. One of the computer acts as server in
this topology. It is a low cost and easy to install network topology.
RING
TOPOLOGY:
In
ring topology each node is exactly connected to each other nodes on a network,
forming a ring. In this type of topology data travels in one direction. When a
computer sends data to the other device or a node it travel through entire ring
until it reaches the destination. In this topology if one node is failed the
whole ring is failed. For example if client 4 requests a file from the server
the file will travel through the client 1, client 2 and client 3 then it will
reach the destination client 4, hence the transfer is low.
STAR
TOPOLOGY:
In
star topology all devices and computers are connected to a central device like
a router, switch or a hub, etc. data is sent to the central device which then
sends out data to the desired host. In this topology if one device fails then the
rest of the network is unaffected. On the other hand if central device breaks
down the whole network crashes. For example, if a computer requests for the
data the central device will locate the data and route that data to the
required destination. It is very popular and most used topology. In this
topology new nodes are very easy to install.
In
star topology the central device can be a computer server or a simple device
like switch, router, hub, bridge, NIC or dial up modem.
MESH
TOPOLOGY:
In
mesh topology each node is exactly connected to one or multiple other nodes on
a network. In this topology all hosts can also be connected to each other which
are known as full mesh. It is expensive and difficult to install and manage.
LAN (LOCAL AREA NETWORK);
LAN stands for local area network. It connects
computers and devices in a limited geographical area such as home, school,
computer laboratory and office. In LAN, computer share printers, storage
devices and different programs with one another. A LAN is the simplest form of
network. In LAN typically one transmission medium is used. Its speed ranges
from 10 Mbps to 1Gbps.
COMMUNICATION:
The basic exchange of
data/ information from one computer to another is known as data communication.
DATA:
In communication data
is an entity that is sent and received over a computer network. It can be in
the form of text, image, numbers, audio or video, etc.
DATA TRANSMISSION:
Sending data from one
device to another device or a computer network is known as data transmission.
